the last pages of summer.

the first of september seemed to instantly usher in cozy cable knits, falling leaves, and the craving for a pumpkin spice latte. you can feel the shift in the air. the switch of the bright blue skies to their grayish green hue…

the cooler days seem to bring with them calmness. a slowing of sorts as routines restart and schedules corral the loose craziness of summer.

i love that God designed seasons. new beginnings.
the finishing of one and folding out of another.
our souls seem to need that.

but with every close of summer i usually feel the same – this catch of hesitation inside as i first step into fall. that nervous question of uncertainty. wanting to move forward but still wanting to hold on to the familiar… {sounds like a theme’s going on here}

and how many seasons have i walked through and yet still can feel like a 12 year old in need of mom and chocolate chip cookies and the reassurance it’s going to be okay.

then i remember every september starts this way. a gradual letting go. acceptance of change. and just like every other time i’ll find myself soon enough embracing this new rhythm and wondering why i ever doubted i would!

and i smile just now thinking of something someone said to me recently –
“grace is already there. just sitting there waiting on you.
it’s not as if it’s scrambling to keep up. or trying to quickly cover your steps..
it’s already paved the way! all the way.
so walk on in confidence and joy!”

yes, walk on.

thanks to everyone who commented and messaged here or on facebook concerning my last post about my hard drive. i already shared with some of you, but for those who didn’t hear there was some good news – the computer repair guy was able to retrieve several thousand photos from his computer, not mine. apparently he “cut” the files from my computer, whatever that means, but he had run them through his checking for viruses and so was able to save the ones he could that way~

it’s far from all. but when i opened the recovered folder to see reese’s baby pictures – birth.hospital.first weeks of life. well i flat out cried happy happy tears!!

so thankful for each sweet memory that could be saved.

here’s a collage of pictures from some of our august times that the computer guy was able to get off my camera memory cards even though the pictures had already been deleted from them.. amazing what they can do!!

Amber, So glad you were able to get your pictures. I would have cried with joy too. It is still terribly hot here where we are but your pictures of fall and all the things of fall along with the closing chapter of summer makes me so long to be up where you are! I miss living even farther north than you are now! Warm cuddles are around the corner for you! *happy sigh

Glad you were able to get your pictures back! Well, most of them at least. I lost a couple thousand last summer when my computer crashed…I have them sitting on a hard drive, but no one was able to retrieve them. Someday….

Glad you had a great summer, the water skiing looks like a blast!
Looking forward to fall…and a pumpkin spice latte. One will be in order for tomorrow on my way to my market.

    Your family is so beautiful!
    Miss you. XxOo

Oh Amber!! My eyes got all teary with sweet relief that you have little Reese’s birth pics! That is priceless. Praise God!! I had a scare w/ my hard drive crashing a few years ago and it appeared that my back up was also faulty. So there was a time of waiting and not knowing IF my 5 years of pictures could be retrieved. During that time I told my husband if they are lost, I will seriously need counseling. Thank God they were able to retrieve every one of them. So, I know a bit of what it feels like to face that huge loss. Pictures really are priceless, aren’t they?!!

Your closing of summer and leading into autumn is beautiful. The skiing…makes me wistful for earlier days in my life. Looks like you had some great family times this summer!! love it.

yes, any of us moms know the scare of LOST pictures!!! and the skiing makes me wistful for earlier days too. i almost went out when the kids did but was like, “nah. sitting on the dock taking pictures just sounds way more restful – i’ve nothing to prove anymore!!” haha. though maybe i should prove to myself i can still get up!! ;))

thanks for sharing in my joy about the pictures. you’re such a sweetheart~

Praise God some of the files were salvageable. I feel your relief!

Your photos are all gorgeous. The huskies are quite daunting looking, I think to be inside the kennel with them would have unnerved me too. Were they friendly?

thanks, melissa! and yes, the huskies were super friendly – almost too friendly.. they are so happy to see ppl and and one of the younger ones was jumping up on emma and freaked her out! the trainers like them to be around ppl to just socialize them etc. but still, they’re kinda scary looking dogs – look too much like wolves to me! i was leery of the older ones that hung at the back and just watched you.. i kept my eye on them too. ;))

Sniffing and clapping that those pictures were recovered. I had the same thing happen to me so I feel your pain. Also, agree on fall. Don’t like it but eventually adjust and get used to it! Your kids are looking so grown up…even your littlest doesn’t have her baby look anymore. SAdness but exciting days too!

that means so much! thank you.. i truly believe the guy was able to save them after he said he couldn’t because so many were praying. God hears and He does answer!! not always how we thought or expected – but He does!

I’m so happy for you that you got some of your pictures!! I was so sad for you, especially about Reese’s birth pictures- so very glad that you got those!
I am trying to get excited about the change of season. If fall wasn’t followed by winter, I’d be a lot more positive about it! :)

Awesome blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Appreciate it!
